A small, almost-to-be-missed actual hole in the wall joint on East Broadway in Mount Pleasant.
I rejoiced at the opportunity to visit my old stomping grounds, especially when it’s for pizza.
The quarter-sized pepperonis pooling with extra virgin olive oil, the stringy, gooey, mozzarella cheese sitting atop a hot mess of sauce. All piled on a perfectly crispy thin-crust base. Then add the Mike’s Hot Honey – sweet with a kick of chili spice.
Let’s talk Detroit Red Top, shall we? Never heard of it? Well imagine a Chicago deep-dish meets a homemade pan pizza – the kind you cook on a baking tray and push all the way to the edges. If that description doesn’t get your mouth watering, I suggest you pop over to AJ’s immediately and order one as words just won’t suffice.
The crispy-yet-chewy classic Margherita with the inches-thick cheesy Detroit Red Top came together to form a mouth-watering, worth-shimmying-in-yo-seat experience. All I can say is: gimme that funk, that sweet, that nasty, that gushy stuff.
- 18″ Grimaldi’s Classic Margherita Pizza (added Pepperoni to half) $24
- 16″ The Detroit Red Top $32
