THE JOINT

The previous night we attempted to grab a bowl of noodles from Chef Hung after doing a Google search to see where the good eats were in Richmond late in the evening. Unfortunately they were just about to closed when we arrived at Aberdeen Mall, where this joint was located.

Fate would bring us back to Richmond the next day and during regular business hours so we we made our way to Chef Hung again for a second try. This time around we were successful: we sat down and placed our order for two bowls of their award-winning Taiwanese beef brisket noodle soup. For an added kick, I chose the fire chilli soup option (I always go for spicy),

The broth was interesting with the fire chilli – I found it to be more tangy and herbal than spicy actually. The broth was also super salty and very concentrated. There were a lot of big chickens of beef as well as some lean and tender slices of beef brisket. The meat was pretty good quality. I chose the flat wheat noodles (I love a flat noodle, the wider/flatter the better!); the also had thing, rice or vermicelli noodles.

My partner’s broth was not spicy but still equally salty. He also didn’t enjoy the noodles and found them to be very generic and not at all authentic – as if they were premade and shipped in to cook.

The service was quick and efficient though pretty rigid which is typical of most authentic Asian eateries in Richmond. They’re not in it to win Employee of the Month awards anywhere. The restaurant was nice on the interior but you’re reminded that you’re inside a mall when exiting. The windows are large and high though only open to a view the other part of the building and their windows.

Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming bowl of noodles, especially with all of the accolades across their table setting, menu and website. I much prefer No. 1 Beef Noodle which is one of my favourite late night, and go-to beef noodle joint. I don’t think I would venture out to Richmond for this again.

    Chef Hung s Beef Noodle won awards in asia and we can see why. There is a lot of beef meat, and beef tendon in a noodles soup base that is very rich and tasty.
