Coming off a 12 day detox sans sugar, dairy, and flour products, I was ready to indulge in some good eats. I picked one of my favouite brunch spot for some chicken and waffles on a lazy Sunday morning. I was a regular Chewies Coal Harbour patron when I lived in the neighbourhood but hadn’t been to the Kits location yet so I was pretty excited to check them out.
We arrived and there was a booth table finishing up; the server came to speak to us and cleaned up the table and sat us within 5 minutes. It was a cozy spot, with a nice window view out onto the residential street a few blocks off of West 4th. The tables lined the bar area and the TVs were showing NFL in full swing. It was a warm and welcoming vibe.
Our server came by to grab drink orders and I eagerly decided on some oysters shots for my partner and I. Our server offered little Caesar chasers for an elevated experience. If you’re not familiar with an oyster shot, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: an oyster with a shot, usually vodka. They were tangy and spicy, and definitely strong given the vodka dominant portion of the chaser. It was a fun way to wake up. Side bar: I was so keen on the shots that when our server dropped them off, an empty water glass rolled off the table and while trying to grab it, I may have very accidentally felt him up. Poor guy, if you’re reading this, I apologize profusely! Can’t take me anywhere…
For food, we both went with the chicken and waffles, mostly because I always talk about how good they are. The chicken was just as I remembered: well seasoned, really juicy, nice crispy breading. Imagine KFC but a million times better. The waffle was thick, light, and super fluffy. It could have passed as a cake, it was subtly sweet and airy. One of my favourite parts of this is dish the bacon jam and honey butter combo, which was also very garlicy. Sweet, salty, fatty with a bit of heat. This mixture was smeared inside the giant waffle pockets. It was exactly what I needed after 12 days of self-induced deprivation.
We ended our meal watching the last part of the Tennessee v. Pittsburgh game, the bar was lively with football fans yelling and cheering here and there. I was entirely content.
