I can only name a few places that serve cheap eats which doesn’t come out of a brown bag, so when I find a restaurant that beats those drive-thru prices and actually serves decent, if not good, quality food – well it’s like I hit the jackpot. Not saying that I’m cheap, but I work hard for my money and if I can save some of it and still feed myself, I’m winning.
Enter X-Site Grill & Bistro, hidden away in North Burnaby right on Hastings Street. This is my go-to joint for a weekday dinner when I’m too lazy to cook but too broke to eat out. This is literally the best of both worlds. Let’s start with their dinner specials, running from Monday-Thursday. For $6.95, you get an entire plate of food, the only catch is you need to order a drink. But honestly, their drinks are just as cheap, and if you go for their daily special, your entire dining bill will come to less than $15 including tax and tip.
I’m a regular patron here and happened to swing by for the Thursday night dinner special, which is Chicken Souvlaki. For $6.95, you get a skewer of chicken, two sides, and pita bread! I opted for a diet Coke which set me back $3.25 but honestly, I’d happily buy the drink if I get the food with it.
Let’s check out the actually food because I know what you’re thinking, how can it be so cheap and not suffer elsewhere? Well I can tell you firsthand, the quality is there. The chicken was delicious, the Caesar salad was substantial, the pita was warm and soft, and the rice was fluffy and cooked perfectly. I don’t have anything else to say except that I almost didn’t want to write this review in case other people start showing up and taking over my spot.
I just want to take a moment to talk about the service too: each time that I’ve been here, which is about once a month for the past year, the service has been great. Our server is always quick and kind and I have not had a single complaint.
Go here, I urge you. Get your money, then spend your money here, and then save some money. Or, drive down the street 2 blocks and go to McDonald’s, because that’s the only other place around where you can feed yourself for these prices.
